1862 ST. PETERSBURG TO HELSINGFORS

NOTES:   1862 RUSSIA #8 (PERFORATED 12) TIED BY BLACK "1" ST. PETERSBURG CANX TO HELSINGFORS W/ RED ST PETERSBURG 9 JUNE 1862 CDS CANX, BLACK BOXED "ANK" RECEIVING MARK OF 23 JUNE 1862, BLUE MERCHANTS MARK: "ASMUS SIMONSEN & CO/St. PETERSBURG". THE BLACK INK MANUSCRIPT MARKING ON THE STAMP IS NOT A CANCELLATION BUT A SUBSEQUENT DOCKING NOTE.

BEAR IN MIND THAT AT THIS TIME RUSSIA WAS STILL USING THE JULIAN CALENDAR (UNTIL 1918) WHICH WAS ABOUT 12-13 DAYS BEHIND THE GREGORIAN CALENDAR USED BY MOST OF THE WORLD BY THIS TIME, EXCEPT GREECE (UNTIL 1924). HENCE THE LETTER DID NOT TAKE 14 DAYS TO TRAVEL BUT MORE LIKELY JUST TWO, AS THERE WAS REGULAR SERVICE BETWEEN HELSINKI AND ST PETERSBURG.
