Notes on reverse

Front: 1820 Greenfield, Massachusetts to Middleborough, Massachusetts paying 12 rate for a letter travelling 80-150 miles pursuant to the rates of 1816. Greenfield cancel with Manuscript Date February 15
Reverse: Contemporaneous numbers
Notes: A nice example of the Manuscript date written into a town handstamp cancel
Condition: Fine with some edge tears, stains and toning.
Contents:
It is somehow refreshing to see that bureaucracy and welfare have little changed. Here is an 1820 form letter (which defaults to "committed to the gaol in this town for debts" and proceeds to claim reimbursement from another town after waiting 90 days. Little did we realize we had National Health and Welfare way back when. Complete with unilaterally billing for expenses without consent. At least it was handled locally.
