Plymouth Brown cancel with Manuscript Day February 20
Reverse: Nothing to note
Notes: A nice example of the Manuscript day written into
a more unusual brown town handstamp cancel. Compelling letter
Condition: Very Fine with usual seal tear.
Contents: It is somehow
refreshing to see that bureaucracy and welfare have little changed. Here
is an 1819 letter (which defaults to "committed to the gaol in this
town for debts" and proceeds to claim reimbursement from another town
after waiting 90 days. Little
did we realize we had National Health and Welfare way back when.
Complete with unilaterally billing for expenses without consent. At
least it was handled locally.
