ÖNIGLICH DÄNISCHE POST ADMINISTRATION

1847 - NICE PRE-WAR K.D.P.A. COVER FROM ALTONA TO LONDON
HUGHMARK-HALPERN TYPE K-9 UNREPAIRED

New 10d Ship Rate effective October 1846

Late KDPA type K-9 before it was repaired in December 1847

London Inland Office Transit Mark July 30, 1847 Jay Type L-17

4d local carriage from Hull to London

NOTES:   Last known use of the KDPA cancel was in June of 1948 when the Duchies of Schleswig-Holstein rebelled and took over the Postal Administration of Altona. They simply removed the K.D. and left the P.A. Great Britain had instituted an agreement with Denmark in 1836 for the exchange of letter posts between the two countries. Prior to this the letters had been handled by the Hamburg Stadtpost. Great Britain and Denmark agreed to exchange mail at Altona where a British-Danish Post Office was established. The other end was the British port of Hull. Original rate was 1 shilling/8 pence or 13 Rigsbank Skilling. The cancel on this cover was first used in June of 1837 and is valued by Hughmark & Halpern type K-9 at $100. This cover demonstrates the late and short lived 10 pence rate which was instituted on 1 October 1846 and ended June 27, 1848. The K-9 cancel was damaged and repaired in December of 1847 with larger letters. The agreement for rates stated that if prepaid, then the Danish rate to Altona was included in the 10 pence ship rate (6d for England and 4d for Denmark). But if it was not prepaid as these black "4" and "10" indicate, the rates due might also collect the Danish rate, but this letter originated in Altona and thus it is more likely the 4d was the rate from Hull to London.
